Sports Writer/Editor – The River Register

Remote Position

The River Register is seeking an experienced sports writer/editor to lead our coverage of local high school athletics.

We are looking for a strong journalist who understands community sports reporting and can produce accurate, engaging and well-written stories that highlight local athletes, coaches and teams.

Responsibilities

  • Cover local high school sports throughout the school year
  • Write game stories, features, previews, recaps and postseason coverage
  • Interview athletes, coaches and other local sources
  • Develop relationships with area schools and athletic departments
  • Identify and pitch compelling local sports stories
  • Take or obtain high-quality photos when appropriate
  • Organize and help manage the newspaper’s weekly sports coverage
  • Edit sports stories and photo captions for accuracy, clarity and style
  • Meet weekly print deadlines and provide timely digital coverage
  • Produce clean, accurate copy consistent with professional journalism standards

Qualifications

  • Previous sports writing or newspaper reporting experience is preferred
  • Strong writing, interviewing, reporting and editing skills
  • Knowledge of high school sports
  • Understanding of AP style and basic journalism standards
  • Ability to work independently and consistently meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness to attend games and events, including evenings and occasional weekends
  • A passion for community journalism and telling the stories of local athletes

Position

This is a remote position with flexibility in scheduling, although attendance at local sporting events is required. The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated and comfortable working independently while communicating regularly with our editorial team.
